With the XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro, the Chinese manufacturer is positioning a new portable compact projector as a competitor to Samsung’s The Freestyle. This is how the little one did in the test.

Home theater in handbag size
The XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro impresses with its minimalist design and compact dimensions. The Harman Kardon HD picture and sound are decent, but cannot compete with the quality of larger and more expensive models like the Xgimi Aura. The lack of native availability of streaming apps such as Netflix and Wow on the smart Android interface makes it a little cumbersome. In addition to HDMI, there are playback options for users with Android smartphones via the built-in Chromecast, Apple fans have to install an additional app for this. With a starting price of 599 dollars, the Xgimi tot is certainly one of the hottest devices in its weight class.

We didn’t like that
- Hardly usable in daylight
- Moderate brightness and black levels
- Android TV noticeably jerks
- Remote control not illuminated
- Google account required

Conclusion
In addition to classic projectors and usually outrageously expensive ultra-short-throw projectors, the mobile devices in the lower price segment complement the projector fleets of electronics giants such as Samsung. The Chinese projector specialist Xgimi is also involved in the market for projectors of all sizes and is presenting a new generation of compact solutions for home cinema with the Xgimi Mogo 2 and its Pro version with Full HD resolution. Netzwelt has extensively tested the smart XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro with Android operating system.
Construction and connection while half asleep
Tech-savvy users can connect and set up the XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro half asleep – and even less technically savvy users will not have any major problems with it. After all, all you have to do is connect the supplied power cable via USB-C, place the projector on a safe, flat surface and then switch it on using the single button on the top of the device.
Connecting the remote control, which is also included, is also done quickly by pressing the “Menu” and “Back” buttons at the same time. Now follows the setup of the user interface, which is much more convenient with an Android smartphone – and unfortunately is not even possible without a Google account.
But if at least the latter is already available, users without an Android mobile device can access the Android user interface of the XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro within a few minutes and can let off steam in various streaming apps from Apple TV to Amazon Prime Video.
Image and sound of the XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro: More cinema doesn’t fit in a backpack
The XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro proves to be extremely easy to use: If the small device or its footprint is moved, the HD image automatically refocuses and thus always remains sharp. Even with an oblique projection angle, no distorted image can be seen thanks to the automatic keystone correction.

However, the image of the XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro is not particularly bright with 400 ISO lumens specified by the manufacturer, which is why the projection looks rather pale even with relatively low residual brightness in the room. Putting the picture in performance mode causes the otherwise pleasantly quiet fan to rev up tremendously, so that the cinema sound is barely audible.
The latter is certainly not a force of nature with two times 8 watts, but it has an extremely fine sound. This makes it particularly easy to watch and understand dialogue-heavy films. Bass-heavy action cinema unsurprisingly shows the little cinema kid his limits in terms of sound. However, if you expect more bass from a device of such a small size, you should think twice and do the math.
Missing streaming apps spoil the fun
A compact projector like the XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro, with its handbag format, has the main advantage of mobility compared to almost intransportable battleships like the XGIMI Aura and should therefore also be mercilessly practical in use, so that the projector and thus the streaming fun can be anywhere in a matter of seconds can be conjured from the backpack.
However, if you use popular streaming apps like Netflix and Wow, you’ll be incredulous when browsing through the compact projector’s smart Android TV interface – because neither of the two standard apps can be accessed natively via the user interface.
The fact that some Xgimi devices often come without a Netflix app for licensing reasons was at least already known and fortunately can be solved with a fairly painless workaround that Netzwelt describes in the linked instructions.
To bridge the lack of an app like Wow, users of Android smartphones can play content directly via the built-in Chromecast. This is initially not possible with an iPhone, since the Xgimi MoGo 2 Pro is not directly AirPlay-compatible. However, the problem is quickly resolved here via the intermediate step of installing an app on the projector.
For whom is the XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro really worth it?
The selection of projectors on the market is now so large that it can be difficult to decide on the right model at first glance. However, each model series has its special area of application: If you want to set up a static home cinema with a huge picture, brutal sound and crystal-clear UHD, the best thing to do is to use ultra-short-throw projectors such as the Xgimi Aura and comparable models from Samsung or LG.
If you don’t need a three-meter screen diagonal, can also get by with Full HD and are satisfied with a fine sound without a large bass sound body, you can boldly access compact and significantly cheaper devices such as the XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro.
In particular, those who rely on mobility and would like to quickly set up and operate the device in different places will find the XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro spot on.
