Samsung has presented a new image sensor with the ISOCELL GN2. The highlight of the module is a new autofocus system that Samsung calls “Dual Pixel Pro”. This is a further development of the well-known dual pixel technology.
While this only compares information from the left and right areas of the image to focus the subject, the Dual Pixel Pro technology also compares information from the upper and lower areas. Samsung “divides” some pixels diagonally instead of just vertically, as was previously the case.
With this trick, the Dual Pixel Pro technology should also be able to focus on tricky subjects. Samsung cites a lock of hair as an example that hangs over the shoulder.
According to Samsung, the sensor is already in mass production. The South Korean manufacturer has not yet named a cell phone in which it is used. The usually well-informed Samsung-Leaker IceUniverse reveals on Twitter, however, that the sensor will premiere in Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra will celebrate.

Already in Mi 11 is packed with Samsung technology. Therefore, using the ISOCELL GN2 in the Mi 11 Ultra would not be a surprise. The cell phone has not yet been officially announced, but was recently shown in a YouTube video. It is a hot contender for the title of “Best Camera Phone 2021”. The predecessor led the DxOMark charts for weeks in the past year.
