Dragon Ball: Sparks fly! Zero was clearly a hit with fans, but it might turn out to be more successful than anyone imagined.
Dragon Ball: Sparks fly! Zero would have done well as it was the first new entry in the Budokai series in years and is a fan favorite among all games, but it did come as a bit of a surprise. It even hit 100,000 concurrent players around launch, which is a very strong number for a fighting game. Now, it sounds like this success is bigger than imagined, as Circana executive director and game analyst Mat Piscatella shared in an interview with GamesRadar: Sparking! If you can believe it, Zero is Bandai Namco’s One of the best selling games of all time.

Piscatella said he was “as surprised as anyone that it became not only the best-selling Dragon Ball game, but one of the best-selling Bandai Namco games of all time.” He went on to note that Bandai Namco Palace has “had some pretty big hits over the years,” with “Elden Ring” clearly being one of the biggest hits, and “Spark!” ” Zero is just another strong game in its catalog. “I didn't expect this,” Piscatella continued.
“It certainly doesn't hurt that it has such a huge cast of characters and a beloved IP and allows people to dive into its history. Even though I've never seen it myself, I know people are very passionate about Dragon Ball. …..I agree with you, it’s a big surprise in a year that’s been a bit rough overall.”
As sad as it is, the passing of creator Akira Toriyama earlier this year has certainly brought a lot of nostalgia to fans, and with a new anime out, there's a lot of love for the series in the air right now . It helps with the sparkle! Zero is also really good.
