You have certainly noticed: The settlers are back, and the game has changed quite a bit since the announcement. But even before that, we asked you what you expect from a new part of this traditional series. And yes, that was a little nasty. At that point, we already knew what was in The Settlers. But we just wanted to know if Ubisoft just developed past our customers’ preferences or really past the general preferences of its customers. The answer: yes.
As many of you have now learned, Unfortunately, your wishes correspond exactly to what Siedler 2022 should not offer. After a first impression, colleague Fabiano is also quite disappointed with the former development game legend:

The Settlers finally played
Even before the reveal, we wanted to know two things from you: First, how much the game should be based on its predecessors. In a second survey you could decide which changes you would like in detail. This is wh at came out of our evaluation:
Siedler should emulate his predecessors
About half of all participants wished that Settlers offer small improvements, but should stay true to its roots
So the position of the GameStar readers is pretty clear on the first question: Settlers should build on the series’ old strengths and not become a completely new game. Only about two percent of you wanted the latter. At least eleven percent of the votes received the answer that the new edition of Siedler should be allowed to take more liberties.
Nevertheless, the first look at settlers in 2022 will probably disappoint the majority of our readers. Because Settlers should now be much less development game than real-time strategy and, like the fifth part, breaks away from its predecessors. It doesn’t look much better when it comes to your content-related wishes.
If you’re still keen to get your own taste of the game, here’s all the information about the January Closed Beta:

You wished for these innovations
The new settler also rejects your most desired innovation: About 20 percent of the votes went to new production chains (1251 votes). Unfortunately, the so-called streamlining at Siedler also affected buildings and production: Chains are rarely mentioned here, and if they are, they are quite short. For example, the ranch produces meat and donkeys without the need for water or fodder.
Your further wishes are almost equal with voting shares between 13 and 14 percent: You would like to have New buildings (871 votes), many different peoples (871 votes), a more complex economic system (865 votes) and one bigger campaign. Oh well. Not too much is known about the Settlers reboot’s campaign, other than that it’s said to have 16 missions and cutscenes with soundtracks.
However, there is not much to notice about the diversity of peoples, economic systems and buildings: For example, there are only three peoples with marginal differences, only relatively few buildings and only short production chains. Here, too, Settlers will probably not be able to fulfill your wishes. If you now feel sadness or horror, then you are not alone. Even Maurice can’t believe what has become of his beloved settler:

What other ideas did you have?
In the comments, you want two things in particular: the famous bustle factor and a more relaxed gaming experience with a focus on economy instead of warfare (so in the latter case, exactly the opposite of what settlers seem to be). For example, Annubis writes:
I want the buzz factor. Everything that goes in the direction of war is best optional or little. More complex sounds good at first. I always play Anno 1800 without conflicts. I’d rather make the settlers happy.
VanTheMan formulates it particularly nostalgically and beautifully, but hopes for a game that is less complex than Anno 1800:
I happily remember playing Settlers with two mice in split screen with my best friend at the time. That wonderful, relaxed hustle and bustle on the monitor when the warriors knock on the door in a friendly manner, just before the duel begins… Oh wonderful.
In contrast to Anno, I wish for much more relaxed gaming. With new population groups in the new year and the resulting needs and conversions, I get too many gray hairs.
At least there is a small ray of hope: Because Settlers at least looks nice and is probably not particularly complex. Whether it corresponds to your idea in this respect cannot be said yet.
Otherwise your comments are roughly the same as the results of the survey. The desire to return to old roots is strongly represented, as housemaster puts it in a nutshell:
I’m hoping for a Settlers 2 remaster with a working multiplayer component and map editor.
Mephisto275 also drew attention to the importance of a good soundtrack:
An atmospheric and appropriate music that you will remember for years to come. The best games “live” on forever THROUGH their music. A lot of people may not be playing the game XYZ these days, but if they only hear a piece of the OST, then they fall straight into nostalgia and the mental cinema starts again. THIS is what the OST is supposed to do for the settlers.
