The National Society of High Scool Scholars (NSHSS) has one in the USA Opinion poll Among young people on their career plans and other aspects such as their thoughts on the subject of AI.

Some of the results are compared with an earlier survey from 2022, with some interesting trends to be identified.

One thing is generally striking: Interest in hospitals and healthcare is very high among young people in the USA, also compared to the technology sector.

About 26 percent of the respondents said to assume that they later work in the healthcare system, while the technology sector only came to an average of 12 percent.

The health sector is generally very popular

Among other things, the young people were asked in what kind of organization they prefer to work.

  • With the general question, medical and health institutions came in second place with 33 percent. Only those who have not been more detailed Big companies achieved an even higher value with 38 percent.
  • There are very large companies in the USA sector in the United States, but the start-up companies, which are also often represented in this area, only came to eleven percent in the survey:

The most sought -after employers are hospitals

In 2024, the NSHSS study also wanted to know which specific employers the young people find particularly interesting.

  • During the current survey, hospitals occupy three of the first four places. At the same time, large tech companies such as Google, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft have mostly lost places compared to 2022.
  • Google, for example, ends up in 7th place instead of at number 7 and Amazon instead of in 5th place. The difference at Spotify, which crashed from 3rd place to 26th place:

The St. Jude is a globally known clinic with over 3,400 employees, where, among other things, many important studies on children with cancer were carried out. The Mayo clinics are highly respected hospitals in the United States that employ over 60,000 people.

Small marginal note from the gaming area: Valve lands in 70th place (2022: 65th place). But what exactly the company with this Stream Should have to do, which is mentioned in the study in brackets behind it is a mystery to us.

Possible influence of concern before AI

Some reports on the study such as that of Xataka.com Link the concern before AI with the particularly great interest of young people in professions in healthcare and the falling interest in tech companies.

  • After all, 62 percent of the respondents indicate at least a little worry To be about the fact that AI could take jobs away from them in which they are interested.
  • 24 percent are even in this regard very disturbed or extremely worrying:

One can certainly assume that the probability in a technology company is greater than in a hospital to be replaced by AI.

However, the survey itself does not establish a connection between the preferred employers of young people and their concerns about the elimination of jobs by AI.

How big is your concern not being able to do a certain job (anymore) because AI takes it over? And could you imagine being more immune from health care? Feel free to write it in the comments!
