YouTube’s most prolific completer bought every game before Wii U and 3DS eShops shut down

Both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops are closing at the end of the month, so YouTuber Jirard “The Completionist” Khalil’s solution is to buy them all.

Last year, Nintendo made the unfortunate decision to shut down the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops, and that date is fast approaching. From March 27th, you won’t be able to buy any games from either of these online storefronts, but you will be able to download any games you’ve previously purchased. There are a whole bunch of problems out there, one of which is that when this happens, as many as 1,000 purely digital games will simply disappear. So, of course, that leaves Khalil with a choice: buy them all (thanks VGC).

To put that in perspective, that’s 886 Wii U games totaling 1.2TB of storage at a cost of $9,673 (£7,943), and 1,547 3DS games, DSiWare and DLC, at 267GB of storage at a cost of $13,118 ( £10,772) cost. That comes to $22,791, or £18,715, which is definitely a lot of money.

But it’s not an easy process, as the whole process does take 328 days to complete. The reason it took so long to complete was that Khalil was concerned that spending so much money at two storefronts at once would disrupt his bank, so he used 464 eShop cards for the daunting task at hand. In turn, he has to redeem each card one by one, except the eShop wallet can only hold $250 at a time, which means he needs to buy the game, redeem the card, buy more games, redeem more cards, until he’s finally done .

One person, or actually a group of people in this case, isn’t going to solve the save process for all of these games, which is part of the reason why Nintendo’s decision is so problematic. Most of these games require a dual-screen setup, which means they aren’t easily ported to other platforms. As Khalil himself has pointed out many times, “That’s why it’s stupid!”
