Notice: Spoilers for the end of Man of Steel
The DC Extended Universe began a decade ago with a film that, for many, is the best installment of the Snyderverse: The Man of Steel. The film starring Henry Cavill It caused a sensation upon its launch, and although it was well received by the general public, there were some decisions that were not entirely liked.
One of them was the fact that Superman ended up killing General Zod at the end of the film, which contradicted one of his great moral rules and upset the most die-hard Clark Kent fans. However, Zack Snyder recently revealed in an interview with the American media GQ the reason behind this controversial decision.
“Zod wasn’t going to stop. He wasn’t going to negotiate an outcome, so it was him or us. And that’s pretty much the game. There was no middle ground. Zod said he would fight until one of us fell. If Superman can’t handle that position, then it is false, then it is not. He has to address the scenarios that are presented to him. He cannot choose, just as you cannot choose when something is outside your morality.
Snyder argues that the decision to kill Zod was not a choice, but rather an obligation. The villain showed no intention of stopping until one of the two died, so Clark Kent had no choice but to end his life before the rays of his eyes destroyed a group of innocents.
Without a doubt, it was a very risky decision, given that the philosophy of Superman It was always to preserve life, even that of his enemies. However, the superhero found himself cornered and chose to take down someone genuinely evil rather than allow several civilians to die in front of his eyes.
