Griock’s return was no coincidence
At the beginning of 2023, everything seemed to point to this The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom would be the game of the year. Even if history has ultimately decided otherwise, especially thanks to the release of very good and unexpected games, Nintendo’s game remains excellent and shines above all for the way in which it has managed to innovate while maintaining the foundations of its predecessor to maintain. Of course, among the new features we remember the new areas (the sky, the depths, the caves, etc.), the new powers, but it should also be noted the appearance of new monsters with challenges. Who didn’t hallucinate when they first came across their copy? Griock of fire, ice or lightning ? Asked by Nintendo dream (whose article was translated into English by Nintendo Everything), The developers have finally revealed the reason for their presence in the game:
To fit the skies, caves, depths and all the new areas, we had to imagine monsters that would fit in well. For example, we wanted a monster that could rival the Lynels from Breath of the Wild in terms of air power. So they needed wings to fly, to be big and look strong… and when we thought about it, we remembered the Griock.
Because yes, remember, Griocks did not appear for the first time in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. A few years ago, players had to face one in the ice temple The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Although he only had two heads at this point, he was already very focused on the elements on that side, as he shot fireballs with one head and ice balls with the other. The Griocks were also present in the form of bosses The Minish cap
New tests for new gameplay
While they’re certainly the flashiest of the new monsters introduced into Tears of the Kingdom, the Griocks aren’t the only ones who have joined this universe’s bestiary. We’re thinking, of course, of the Hands of Miasma (which make Breath of the Wild’s Guardians look like little security towers), but also of other monsters that are a little less frightening. According to Nintendo developers, each of these new enemies was added to correspond to a new gameplay or design element:
When creating the monsters, we prioritized gameplay. (…) We looked to see if there were any monsters that met our needs in the older games, and if there was a match, we adapted them to implement them in Tears of the Kingdom. For the caves, we wanted a monster that could cling to the ceiling, to match the terrain. Since there was no comparable monster in previous games, we created the Trogloblins. As for the gameplay, thanks to Amalgam it is possible to create long-range weapons and monsters like trogloblins allowed you to highlight this new power.
You would have understood Zelda Tears of the Kingdom’s new monsters were not included randomly, but were intended to complement and highlight the game’s new gameplay elements. For some it is a detail, for others it is proof that everything has been thought through in advance.
