The map in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is much bigger than you might expect, and players have noticed something interesting about its location.
Spoilers ahead for “Tears of the Kingdom”!
A big selling point of Kingdom Tears is obviously the floating islands above Hyrule. Why don’t they, they’re amazing, right? But it seems the game is hiding a big secret – the entire subterranean area is almost as big as Hyrule itself. Nintendo somehow managed to keep a pretty ridiculous secret, and really explain why the game took so long (and make it even more of a technological marvel). Interestingly, though, the depth of Hyrule seems to reflect their depth above ground.
As spotted by GamesRadar, Media Molecule lead designer Peter Field shared a nice picture How exactly the ground we’re all familiar with in Hyrule turns over in the depths. He demonstrates this by showing that if there is a mountain on the ground, there is usually a deep pit in the ground. It’s a cool but subtle detail that’s easier to notice by looking at the map.
That’s not the only thing above and below ground share with each other. On the Tears of the Kingdom subreddit, a player shared some tips, noting that “the temple and the root of light are in the same location. Those names are anagrams for each other reversed.” Think if you’ve managed to get all the temples above ground But not all light roots in the depths are very useful!
It’s one of those details that really makes you appreciate the amount of thought and detail that went into this sequel – like the easy ways you can share cool secrets with your friends, or the more endearing tributes to the late Satoru Iwata.
