I don’t think we need to worry about Zenless Zone Zero since it has made nearly $100 million since its launch a month ago, but it’s definitely not MiHoYo’s best result.
MiHoYo’s latest foray into mobile gaming, Zenless Zone Zero, got off to a strong start last month, managing to rake in $25 million in less than a week. Well, it’s been over a week now, four weeks actually, so there’s only one question: how much has it made in total now? According to Gacha Revenue, which tracks revenue from various mobile games, it’s made around $100 million. That’s based on data from Chinese consumers, who account for the bulk of the revenue at just under $69 million, and then Japan and the rest of the world combined at $31 million.

That’s obviously nothing spectacular, but compared to Genshin Impact, which made nearly $250 million in its first month, it’s not a stellar debut. This seems to be part of a continued decline in launch performance for miHoYo, as Honkai Impact 3rd made $130 million in its first month. Still better than Zenless Zone Zero, but again only half of what Genshin Impact made. But that doesn’t mean we have to worry about either game (and not just because that’s a lot of money).
Genshin Impact may be a special case because it was released in October 2020, when many people were still stuck at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic and gaming spending was up across the board. Spending has obviously dropped since then, partly because the lockdown is no longer in place, but also because of various economic difficulties in many regions. But it’s also important to be clear that these games are making money, so you don’t have to panic.
