Who made it?
Nintendo was behind this, which made the NA digital release even more surprising.
What is the premise?
You tap and press buttons to the beat of a series of funky songs — it’s a rhythm game, what did you expect? Tsunku once again takes charge of the composition here and the songs thereafter ooze style.
There’s even a (loose) story in Megamix that only relates to the journey to the sky world. We’ll admit that it’s not an amazing plot, but it’s enough to get you through hours of rhythmic gameplay, so we can’t complain.
Why should I play it?
As the name suggests, Rhythm Heaven Megamix is something of a ‘best of’ mixtape for the franchise, but that doesn’t mean the game doesn’t bring anything new to the table.
The series has never made as much of a splash around the world as it has in Japan, so this entry acts as a nice summary of everything that makes the click. The writing is comically smooth in its weirdness, the visual style exudes mesmerizing liveliness, and the songs are enough to get even the most rhythmically challenged going in no time.
Like the best rhythm games, this is a title that’s easy to pick up, but hard to master. We found ourselves returning to the same songs over and over again to rack up bigger and better combos, filling hours of play with ease.
While physical copies were available in Europe, it would be a shame to see huge audiences miss out on the digital-only version of this one.
How much is that?
$29.99 / £24.99 / $29.99. A bit expensive for a rhythm game? Possibly, but any fan of the show will tell you it’s worth it and might even try to give you a tenner to lessen the sting. Developed in-house at Nintendo and with hours of gameplay to spare, it’s a magnificent showcase for the series and worth picking up while you can. There’s even a demo you can try first!
We’ll be back soon with another 3DS or Wii U eShop recommendation as part this series ‘Countdown’. Let us know below if you already have this in your collection and share your thoughts. Also, feel free to nominate other games — we may feature them in the coming days.
