Remember the massive 2021 NVIDIA GeForce leak that revealed a slew of unannounced games in development? Well, one of the leaked titles is Fantasy Tactics Remaster from Square Enix. Ichiro Hazama and Masanobu Suzui, producer and director Theatrhythm Final Bar Line they interviewed recently Finishing and later revealed that the Final Fantasy Tactics team is “incredibly busy right now.” This has led to a lot of speculation online that the team is busy finishing work on the Fantasy Tactics Remaster.
Our question is about the game’s cast, specifically the absence of the main characters. It is now the sixth anniversary in Japan and we are still missing characters like Rikku, Order XIII, many characters from FINAL FANTASY TACTICS and FINAL FANTASY XIV. Is there a reason for this, can we hope to see them one day?
Hazama: I think I can somehow explain the situation. As for the FINAL FANTASY TACTICS characters and why most of them are not in the game yet, it’s basically similar to what we’re doing with Theatrhythm. This is a title that comes with the entire series, including characters and stories for each one. What we really don’t want to do with games like Opera Omnia and Theatrhythm is to simply do Final Fantasy as we think it is, as we think it should be. We have to check with the staff responsible for each of the individual titles.
For example, if it’s about FINAL FANTASY VII, we have to go talk to Nomura-san to check, for FINAL FANTASY TACTICS, it’s the team that owns Tactics, we have to talk to them. There are different people in the company who own these games, who made them. We have to talk about the characters, what abilities they should have, how they should behave in the game, how they should be portrayed, this kind of performance. We need to check all that, we just don’t want to do it alone.
The Tactics team is incredibly busy right now, they have other things to do. They are currently very involved in some other project so we just don’t have time to talk to them. I think that’s probably why more TACTICS characters aren’t included in the game, we just need time to find out the details. I think that happens, at least with Tactics characters. I’m sure they will put them in the game, Fujiwara-san wants TACTICS, I know that.
