A German study on major depressive disorder tried something new and invited participants to play the charming Super Mario Odyssey to track their depressive symptoms while playing the game. 46 people with diagnosed depression participated in the research. The participants were divided into three groups, one of which played Super Mario Odyssey, one used the “CogPack” program, and one received standard clinical treatment, which included medication and psychotherapy. The results showed that the Super Mario Odyssey group fared the best, with an almost 50% reduction in depressive symptoms. The results concluded that “video game training may be a cost-effective and feasible intervention for patients with MDD that can be used in conjunction with regular treatment and therapy.”
