Hello folks and welcome back to another edition of Box Art Brawl!
Last week we took a look at Astro Boy: Omega Factor for the Game Boy Advance, and believe it or not, we had a draw! Both the EU/NA and the Japanese variant won 50% of the vote each, so uhh… Either we have two winners or no winners. We’ll let you decide!
This time we’re looking at Super R-Type for the SNES. Recently released on Nintendo Switch Online, this 1991 shoot-em-up is a classic classic, and its box designs are also pretty badass. This week it’s a classic three-way brawl, with a trio of extremely unique designs, so we’re very interested to see how this one plays out.
But enough rambling… take note!
Be sure to cast your votes in the poll below; but first, let’s look at the box designs themselves.
North America
This is the ‘iconic’ case design for the Super R-Type, isn’t it? The menacing creature hovering front and center is instantly recognizable to R-Type fans and newcomers alike. It’s an impressive piece and really illustrates what the actual gameplay will be like. We love it.
Europe
European design is a little tamer, so to speak. There are a few explosions and what not, but the focus is on the ship, with a bunch of text on the left side. Both the NA and EU designs share the same font design for the title, which is good, because it’s awesome.
Japan
We’re not quite sure what the hell is going on here, but gosh, it’s a cool design regardless. The vertical orientation really makes the image stand out, and despite the title being a drastically different design to its western counterparts, it’s still incredibly effective.
Thanks for voting! See you next time for another round of Box Art Brawl.
