Digital Foundry’s John Linneman revealed the latest Digital Foundry Direct Weekly that he spoke to a num ber of different developers about whet her or not a revised Nintendo Switch console is still in the works. What he understood from the people he talked to was that a secretive Kyoto-based company had planned a revised unit, but it was ultimately scrapped. The reasons for this remain unknown, although it could be due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing market turbulence worldwide due to component shortages, worldwide lockouts, etc. Linneman believes that whatever Nintendo plans to release next will be a lot. the successor to the Nintendo Switch system that originally launched worldwide in March 2017.
“So I think at one point internally, from what I can gather from talking to different developers, there was some sort of mid-gen Switch update planned at one point and it doesn’t seem to be happening anymore. And so it’s pretty clear that what they make next is going to be real next-gen hardware.”
