Just days after Wētā Workshop, the studio behind Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings, announced that it would be showing off more of the game on September 22nd, the team has announced that it has been pushed back to early 2025.

In a statement published on Twitterthe New Zealand-based studio has revealed that in order to ensure its vision is realized, the game’s launch is being pushed back to next year. Tales of the Shire didn’t have a specific release date, but it was set to launch this holiday season.

More details about the date will be revealed at the Hobbit Day Showcase taking place on the above date.

Here is the statement in full:

“All of us here at Wētā Workshop are excited to have you join us in the Shire, a peaceful corner of JRR Tolkien’s world. When a new Hobbit first sets foot in the Bywater, we want that moment to be everything you hoped it would be.

To ensure we realize that vision, Tales of the Shire will now launch in early 2025.

Thank you for your patience and continued support. Be sure to tune in to our A Hobbit Day presentation on September 22nd to learn more about Tales of the Shire and our new release date.”

Originally revealed back in April, Tales of the Shire is a very different Lord of the Rings game — sort of a cross between Middle-earth and Animal Crossing. The big difference is that the game focuses on cooking and food, and there are many different cooking techniques that you can use to prepare different types of food. We played the game at the Summer Game Fest and were pleasantly surprised.

Well, like The The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy Filmmaker Peter Jackson once said, “A video game is never late, never early, it comes right when it’s supposed to.” Maybe we allow ourselves a little freedom here…
