Last December 6 Final Fantasy V turned 30 years old, That’s why Square Enix to celebrate it shared some very interesting things on networks.
in a blog, Tetsuya Nomura himself shared details of how he created Gilgamesh. In fact, it was one of the first things he did in this industry. We leave you the complete details in the words of Nomura:
FFV’s 30th anniversary means that it’s been 30 years since I started in game development. And to think that it’s been so long… My memories of the time, I didn’t care about being a great character designer or director. I was just a monster designer concerned with how I was doing compared to the wildly popular monsters in the DQ series. I created things like cactuar and tonberry in the hope that they would bring some popularity to FF monsters, and among them was Gilgamesh himself.
The development process was completely different back then, with most monsters having proposed images first and their backstories handled later. Personally, the character I wanted to push the most in my FFV sketchbook was this multi-armed magical being named Gilgamesh who carried a different weapon in each hand. And there was another one called “Benkei” on a different page of my sketchbook, with lots of weapons on his back. These two monsters were proposed to be used as forms of Gilgamesh before and after the transformation. From there, he was added to the setting and was even given exciting dialogue and additional scenes in battle.
As a new member of the team, I remember being very impressed with how my colleagues skillfully integrated my design into the title. With that, Gilgamesh was born, not just as a grunt to attack, but with his own unique personality.
By the way, in those days the implementation of visual designs in the game programming was done first, so it was later that the images of Gilgamesh were based on the art of Mr. Yoshitaka Amano.
Nomura also reflected on Gilgamesh’s appearance in FFVIII, commenting that he has become very popular as he continues to wade through the space between dimensions.
