It may seem simple at first, but sometimes it can be difficult to find your friend code and add new friends on Switch.Since it is always more fun to play with friends than to play alone, we are going to explain, step by step, how to add new friends on Nintendo Switch in case you have recently been given one or bought it for your children or friends.
This article is intended for all those who have just got a Nintendo Switch and still do not get along very well through the different menus. Don’t worry, we have all been newbies at some point and we are here to help you.

First steps
The first thing we must do to be able to send or receive friend requests is link our user account on Switch with a Nintendo account. If you don’t know how to add a user account, you can follow these instructions.
To do this, we have to enter Console Settings within the Home menu; Once there, we go down until we find the User Profile option, we select the user that we want to link and we click on the option that appears in the following image:
The next step will be to log in to our Nintendo account through our Switch. To do this, we can do it by accessing the email that we have linked to the account or scanning a QR code. If you don’t have a Nintendo account, here you have all the information to create it.
Where to find your friend code on Nintendo Switch
Finding your friend code on Nintendo Switch is very simple: we just have to select our user icon in the Home menu and, right after, we will see a summary of your profile. In it, our name, the icon we have on, the history of programs we have played and, of course, our friend code will appear.
Our password is 12 numeric digits followed by the letters SW, so if we want someone to send us a friend request, we just have to give them our code. But sending friend requests via password is just one of the ways we can do that.
How to send a friend request
If we want to send a friend request, we have to go, within the previous menu, to the Add friend tab:
Here, we can review the friend requests received, as well as those we have sent, but we will also find the various options to send a request. Let’s talk about them:
- Search through local communication. As its name suggests, it shows us all those users who are close to us. To activate it, we just have to select this option, choose between one of the icons that appear and then select the person to whom we want to send the request.
- Find users you’ve played with. If we choose this option, we will be able to see a list of all the people with whom we have played, both by local communication and through the Internet. Now, to play online, you will need a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online. We just have to choose the user to whom we want to send the friend request.
- Search by friend code. It is the way we mentioned above. In this case, we have to manually enter the Nintendo Switch friend code, hit search and the user in question will appear. We just have to send you the request.
friendship suggestions
We have left for the end the last way to send requests, igamesnews; we’re talking, of course, about friend suggestions. To send a request through this mode, we just have to go to the suggestions tab within this same menu:
If our Nintendo account is also linked to our 3DS or Wii U, we can find those friends we had on those platforms who also have Switch here and send them a friend request. If, in addition, we have linked our Twitter or Facebook account, we can also find those friends who, like us, have linked their profile to these social networks. Finally, if we play titles like Super Mario Run and we have also accessed them with our Nintendo account, we can find friends who play those titles here.
Where can we see our list of friends
It should be noted that, Until we accept a friend request or the other person accepts ours, we cannot be friends. Now, once this is done, the way to see the people who are our friends on Switch is simple: we just have to go to the Friends list tab and, there, we can see them all.
We will be able to see if they are connected or not, the titles they have played, as well as mark them, if we want, as favorites, so that they always appear at the top of our list.
As a curiosity, it should be noted that, after the 2.0.0 update of the Nintendo Switch Online app, we can now also see in this application which friends are online.
