The next Super Mario movie is still more than a year away, but one voice actor who appeared in the first movie as Spike is already having doubts about a possible return.

In a recent interview with ScreenRantcomedian and actor Sebastian Maniscalco said he doesn't have much faith in Foreman Spike appearing in the second film. Granted, this character was more of a cameo than anything, paying homage to the arcade and NES title Wrecking Crew.

Here's his tongue-in-cheek take on exactly why he thinks Spike isn't coming back:

So we went to Universal Studios, and they had a Super Mario store with all their merchandise. I was with my kids, I say, “Guys, come on. I'm going to show you daddy's figure in a stuffed animal.” No Spike, no nothing. It stopped at me. It was every other character, and then me, I don't have animals, I don't have anything. So the fact that I didn't have a stuffed animal doesn't give me much confidence that I'll be back for a sequel. I haven't heard anything, so your guess is as good as mine. [Chuckles]

Some comment on social networks he was also quick to note that at the end of the first movie, Mario and Luigi moved to the Mushroom Kingdom – with Spike in Brooklyn.

Obviously, Maniscalco's comments still don't guarantee anything, and we're sure the film could inspire anyone from the Mario universe to take their next outing if they really want to – whether it's a full role or just a brief cameo like many others in the original film .

The source also notes that the main cast members have yet to be confirmed for the second Mario movie, but it's probably easy to tell who's returning at this stage. Toad's voice actor Keegan-Michael Kay mentioned in October that the sequel would be “a bit broader in scope” and contain some “really fantastic Easter eggs”.

The next Mario movie is set to arrive in the US April 3, 2026 and in various other territories in the same month. According to Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, it's “a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.” games.
