Update [Sat 11th May, 2024 01:45 BST]:

X (formerly Twitter) posted a response to this news via his ‘xGaming’ accountnoting that this is a product decision made by Nintendo”.

@xGaming: The gaming community is one of the largest and most vibrant communities on our platform, and we are dedicated to improving and supporting gaming-related features. As part of Nintendo’s planned discontinuation of content sharing on X from the Nintendo Switch, starting June 11th, users will need to download Switch game media directly to their smartphones and share it natively on our platform.

During this process we worked with Nintendo to provide API access for this integration, but ultimately the product decision was made by Nintendo.

Our partnership with Nintendo remains strong and we are working together to ensure a smooth transition for all users. We will continue to work with partners to bring new and exciting experiences to our global gaming community.

The following note from a reader is also attached at the bottom of the same post:

This is a direct response to X changing its API. Specifically, X charges companies upwards of $40,000 or more per month to access its API. Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox already removed X integration last year.

Original article [Thu 9th May, 2024 03:45 BST]:

Nintendo has announced that it is ending support for social media platform ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter).

This will take effect from June 10, 2024, and as of this date, Switch users will no longer be able to post screenshots and videos to X from the system album. This also includes stopping sending friend requests to social media users.

This will affect multiple Switch games including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Splatoon 3 and Splatoon 2. You can get the full review at Official Nintendo announcement under:

Discontinuation of X (formerly Twitter) and social media integration for the Friend Suggestions feature on Nintendo Switch (June 10, 2024)

On June 10, 2024, we will be removing the integration for X (formerly Twitter), as well as the ability to send friend requests to friends on social media (social media integration) within the suggest friends feature on Nintendo Switch.

This affects the following services:

  • The feature to post screenshots and videos to X (formerly Twitter) from albums in the Nintendo Switch HOME menu will become unavailable.
    • While posting screenshots and videos to Facebook will continue to be available, this service may also be discontinued at a later date.
    • The ability to publish Super Smash Bros. Ultimate album screenshots in the Nintendo Switch home menu in Smash World, in the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, will also become unavailable.
  • Nintendo Switch title publishing features Splatoon 3 will adjust.
    • When posting from a mailbox in Splatsville, Inkopolis Plaza, or Inkopolis Square, you will no longer be able to post to X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook; the data will be sent directly to the Nintendo servers. This change will allow users to post without one of these social media accounts, but images posted by players under the age of 13 will not be visible to other players.
    • The image created for the post will be copied to the Album in the HOME menu of the Nintendo Switch. Pictures in the album can be uploaded to smart device wirelessly or on a PC via USB cable.
  • Nintendo Switch title publishing features Splatoon 2 will adjust.
    • You will no longer be able to post to X (formerly Twitter) from the mailbox in Inkopolis Square.
    • The characters that appear and the posts that appear in the square will be replaced with data that is already prepared within the game software.
  • The feature to send friend requests to social media friends via the Friend Suggestions menu on I Page, in the HOME menu of the Nintendo Switch, will no longer be available.
    • You can continue to use the friend suggestion feature from smart devices, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

We sincerely thank players for using this feature over the years.
