You know what day it is and you know how PlatinumGames’ director Hideki Kamiya has a habit of trolling fans.
With this in mind, the Japanese company known for series like Bayonetta has broadcast a clearly fake press conference earlier today announcing the “Neo-Classic Arcade Shocking 10” — a series supposedly comprised of the existing release sun crest and 9 new games.
In the skit above (be sure to turn on subtitles), you can see Kamiya is not in the mood for questions on this particular day of the year. He spends a good amount of time mouthing off at the audience and then abruptly ends the conference so he can go and “burn rubber” on the freeway with his crew.
Platinum has also shared this announcement on its official website, which lists the 10 games (the 9 new games are apparently work-in-progress):
PlatinumGames’ NEO-CLASSIC ARCADE series carries on the spirit and fun of classic gaming using modern technology.
On February 22, 2022, the first title in the series, SOL CRESTA, was released. (Now available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Steam!)
And on April 1st, 2022, PlatinumGames announced new plans for the “NEO-CLASSIC ARCADE” series at the “SHOCKING 10: Announcement of 9 All New Titles” press conference. Check out the video from the press conference!
Volume 1 – SOL CRESTA Free-Form Vertical Scrolling Shooting
Volume 2 – Galactic Badass Beat ‘Em Up Action (WIP)
Volume 3 – Battle Action Block-Breaking Game (WIP)
Volume 4 – Sci-Fi Superhuman Soccer (WIP)
Volume 5 – Pt Spectacular Side-Scrolling Action (WIP)
Volume 6 – Constella-Style Side Scrolling Shooting
Volume 7 – High-Speed Action Racing (WIP)
Volume 8 – Dynamite Sexy Puzzle Game
Volume 9 – Ultimate Top-View Bastard Action (WIP)
Volume 10 – Apocalyptic Giant Robot Fighting (WIP)
So, what’s actually going on here? It’s hard to say when it comes to PlatinumGames. While the YouTube upload appears to be one big joke, based on the Japanese company’s past history, the actual announcement of nine new games might actually be real — or at least one or two of them. ‘Constella-Style Side Scrolling Shooting’ and ‘Dynamite Sexy Puzzle Game’ are the only ones on the list that aren’t Works-In-Progress, but who knows?
Sol Cresta was originally revealed on 1st April 2020 as part of a series of Platinum website announcements, and a year later on 1st April 2021, the same game was confirmed as a legit upcoming release.
What do you make of this latest announcement though? Is it just a joke, or is Platinum actually teasing something here? Tell us what you think in the comments section.
