Has sunk into yet that almost every single mainline Final fantasy game between I and XII is now available on Switch? That’s thanks to this week’s release of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series, which was a long, a long time overdue.

When the games launched on Steam and mobile between 2021 and 2022, many people were happy that the classic six Final Fantasy games were finally becoming more widely available. But there was one big topic that swept the world when it came to Pixel Remasters — the font.

The font in the original Pixel Remaster releases was not popular, at least in the west. For many, it clashed with the retro pixel art visuals, and the thin, sterile style isn’t the most pleasing to the eyes when played on a PC screen.

Fans began creating mods to “fix” the font, using variations from Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls on the GBA to Final Fantasy: Istic Quest chunky pixel fonts. Various guides, including this one from RPG sitedescribed the many ways you can get a “better” font and improve your experience with these classics.

However, it soon became apparent that Japan did not have the same problem. Although it didn’t have a pixel-style font, the Japanese font was much cleaner, a little thicker, and—most importantly—much easier to read.

When Square Enix announced the console versions last year (in the middle of the night, mind you…), fans hoped that the gap between the game’s PC and console releases would give Square enough time to “fix” that font for good. And, luckily, the developer did.

Along with a host of other additions such as a changeable soundtrack and EXP, gil and ability point modifiers, the console versions of Pixel Remasters allow you to switch between the original PC font, called ‘Modernized’, and the new ‘Classic’ font, which is based on pixels. You can change them in the menu at any time in all six games.
