There’s a huge scene online devoted to modding and recreating Nintendo’s past systems in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways, and the latest video making the rounds is the “Wii XL” project. Yep, move over 3DS XL, because there’s a new and much bigger system on the block.
Modder and YouTuber Jon Bringus (Bringus Studios) thought the Wii “could be improved” by simply scaling it up. The end result is a system that is said to be “12 times the volume” of the original model and is fully functional – meaning it can still play Wii and GameCube titles. It also comes with some improvements such as HDMI support.
Here’s something about it from the creators:
“It’s roughly a 2:3 to 1 scale model of the Wii and 12 times the volume. Because it’s got a regular Wii inside, you can do everything the Wii can do with this thing, which includes reading game discs, plugging in a GameCube controllers and memory cards and using USB devices Every button on the Wii can be accessed from the front panel Power and reset are their own buttons that go right next to the actual buttons on the Wii and by flipping the SD card door down you can access the SD card as and an eject button.
“Admittedly, accessing the sync button was a bit of an afterthought, and the best way to get to it is to simply pop it out of the DVD slot. To keep things simple, there’s no sensor strip port, a battery-powered wireless sensor strip can be used instead of that. Inside is a Wii HDMI adapter that can scale the Wii up to 1080p for use on modern displays, unfortunately no CRT compatibility.”
