Peanut butter like Shiba Inu officially the best boy in the world. This adorable pup made history by completing a speedrun on the world stage at Games Done Quick’s biannual speedrunning event, AGDQ 2024.
With the help of his owner and human speedrunner JSR_, Peanut Butter trained to wow the world with the Speedrun Gyromite. You know, one of only two games officially compatible with ROB, that NES toy robot accessory. JSR_ went on to record the trip his YouTube channel (in the hilariously titled ‘PB & J‘ playlist). And since entering AGDQ 2024 last October, the hype for this run has been building.
Today, the pair took to the stage (across the creek, because we can’t imagine how hard it would be for a dog to run on stage) to showcase their talents. Playing in the ‘Game B – Dog Assistance’ category, the pair had to go through the entire game, with an estimated duration of 30 minutes.
But how can a dog speed up a Gyromite? With a custom controller, patience and lots of treats, of course! JSR_ created a large controller that allows PB to put his paws on four different buttons — ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘A & B’ together and the ‘Select’ button.
Using those buttons, Peanut Butter must press the correct one to lower the colored pillars to allow Professor Hector to make his way through the stage and collect the dynamite. Releasing the button raises these poles, meaning that Peanut Butter must remove his paw to help the professor climb the high ledges. Sometimes it can also result in crushing. It’s pretty easy for a human – and a ROB, of course – but a dog? Watching the little dog navigate the buttons while JSR_ guides his paws (and nose) using treats and commands is a delight.
Unfortunately, things didn’t work out Enough plan during today’s run. Peanut Butter and JSR_ were unlucky towards the end of the run, encountering the enemy that took the professor’s last life. But the couple had a backup plan, and even with the hiccups, the audience, the internet, and we were in love. And they still succeeded even below the estimate, 26:24.
He got peanut butter many treats and attention throughout the race, and we’re sure they’ll get a lot more. Maybe we’ll see the dynamic duo back on stage at SGDQ 2024 this summer… You can watch Speedrun on Twitch below by clicking on the GDQ logo or jump over to 10:11:38 on VOD.
AGDQ 2024 is currently taking place at the Wyndham Grand in Pittsburgh, PA, and is a hybrid of an in-person and online event.
