Rare has had successful work over time with Nintendo, but not every project has necessarily seen the light of day. One of those games was the role-playing title Codename Project Dream. It started on the Super Nintendo and was eventually scaled back during the Nintendo 64 era before its parts turned into else projects.
While a Super Nintendo version is believed to have existed, it seems we now have actual photo evidence Dream 64after Rare co-founder Tim Stamper randomly posted a photo on social media, with the caption: “Arr…! So it’s true… Dream 64 does exist…!”.
In the picture you can see a Nintendo 64 development cartridge running on an N64. Next to it is the NTSC Super Nintendo version of the Dream Project. The N64 cart is labeled “the latest version of the Dream 64” and is dated November 21, 1996.
Famed Rareware composer Grant Kirkhope responded to Stamper’s tweet by suggesting it has an intro as well as “some” gameplay. Although it’s not clear how far the development went, as mentioned before, it eventually morphed into other projects like Banjo-Kazooia.
In recent years, this isn’t the only unreleased Rare project to resurface online. Nintendo 64 game Planet of the dinosaurs (which later became Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube) was leaked online, and the unreleased version of GoldenEye 007 XBLA for Xbox 360 also received unofficial rid.
