Right now, it’s all about Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for most Switch owners, but there are still plenty of other new releases to enjoy.
One in particular that arrived this week was LEGO 2K Drive – a new open-world driving simulation that features all sorts of live service elements. The first round of reviews is out now, and overall it seems like it’s been a decent experience so far. Below is what several media outlets had to say:
IGN gave LEGO 2K Drive an 8 out of 10 – calling it “one part The Crew 2, one part Mario Kart and a thousand parts… LEGO parts”:
“It’s one that embraces the complete creative freedom that real LEGO provides like few games before it, with an amazing tool for creating custom vehicles that’s worth the price of admission alone. The current inability to share those designs with others is disappointing – especially in the wake of yet another tiresome stores with microtransactions – but LEGO 2K Drive is certainly the fastest and funnest way to play with blocks in a while.”
People over on VGC also thought it was a “great open world game” – giving it 4 out of 5 stars, but were unimpressed with the 2K microtransactions:
“Lego 2K Drive is a great open-world racing game with an infectious sense of humor and impressive customization options. As long as you can handle the typical 2K grindy microtransactions and take steps to avoid the big problem of deleting your save on startup, it’s worth playing.”
Digital trends was even harsher on microtransactions, giving it only 3 out of 5 stars:
“If you stay away from the shop and online modes, there’s so much to enjoy Lego 2K Drive. The colorful story mode alone is worth the price of admission, creating a version Forza Horizon it’s much more appealing to the younger crowd and casual racing fans. It makes me feel like a kid again, playing with Legos in my bedroom. But every time I go back to the main menu and see the store, I come back as a world-weary adult who can’t help but be critical of disturbing business practices.”
In contrast, GamesRadar+ raved about LEGO 2K Drive – calling it a “very classy game” for all ages and giving it 4 out of 5 stars:
“LEGO 2K Drive is clearly a very classy game. It looks great, it works well, it’s fully featured and it’s well balanced to keep everyone entertained. LEGO 2K Drive is an easy recommendation, whether you’re looking for a gift for a child or just want a good a palette cleanser for yourself.”
And ours sister site Pure Xbox I thought it was a nice “LEGO themed shot” at series like Forza Horizonawarding it 7 out of 10 stars.
“LEGO 2K Drive is at its best when it focuses on the last word of its title – driving around and taking on wild and wacky side missions as you come across them is the best way to tackle this open-world racer. real race
it lets it down a bit and we think the game is a bit pricey for its levels of presentation, but this is still a fun and varied affair for the whole family. If you’re craving a crazy LEGO-themed version of Forza Horizon, this is pretty good for you, just don’t expect the same AAA levels of brilliance you’d get from the Xbox exclusive series.”
