So what did other critics have to say? Starting with God is a nerd – also felt that the overall package in the Plus version was a little weak, giving it a seven out of ten:
“Sonic Origins Plus is a great way to play four fantastic games, but the overall package is a bit weak. The new additions to the Plus version are even weaker, making it hard to recommend even a cheap upgrade, let alone the full package. Still, you just can’t deny the quality of the fantastic games in this collection, and if you’re desperate for a way to play them on modern consoles, you’ll probably still be happy spinning your life away.”
Game trend also gave it a seven out of ten, but felt that some of this content should have been in the base game:
“While it feels like the additions to Sonic Origins Plus should have been in the base game, Amy is a joy to play as. She’ll let you play these four excellent games in new ways, despite some strange design decisions. Unfortunately, the selection of Game Gear games isn’t very good aged and corrupted by some horrible sound emulation.”
Noisy pixel wasn’t that impressed – awarding the ‘Plus’ version a six out of ten. While he enjoyed the inclusion of Amy, he wasn’t too impressed with the quality of the Game Gear titles:
“While Amy’s inclusion of gameplay is fantastic, the poor state of some Game Gear titles is too frustrating to ignore. Features like the Classic Music pack and Premium Fun should have been updated for free. In fact, the amount of bonus purchases and content locked behind DLC makes the experience Sonic Origins Plus exhausting. So if you’re desperate to complete this collection, it’s here, but you can just skip this release.”
Press-Start Australia was much brighter and enjoyed Sonic’s “nice little extra celebration” – giving it an eight out of ten:
“Sonic Origins Plus’ new additions are somewhat of a mixed bag, and may not justify the $10 upgrade fee for anyone who bought Origins last year, but at the same $60 newcomer price and in its fancy new physical edition, it’s a neat little further celebration of Blue Blur’s beginnings.”
And last but not least, Escapist also gave the game an eight, calling it a “great” collection and a way to play most of blue blur’s classic experiences:
“Sonic Origins it was great, and Sonic Origins Plus is great plus. It’s that simple. It’s a fun collection made even more fun with the matching addition of Amy Rose, Knuckles in Sonic CD, and a dozen emulated Game Gear games. Some of those Game Gear games, I dare say, are still worth playing today, especially Sonic Triple Trouble. Sonic Origins Plus also adds to the Classic Music Pack and Premium Fun Pack additional content that was available for the original release. So if you want to play most of the classic Sonic games ever made in one place, you can pick this up and have fun.”
