COG connected gave Sports Story a score of 60 out of 100 – noting that it was underdeveloped compared to its predecessor:
“Sports Story pales in comparison to its predecessor. The plot fails to capture the whimsy that permeates the original. While I understand Sidebar Games’ decision to go big with its story, in doing so it removes the simplicity that makes Golf Story so memorable. While it expands its gameplay with numerous new sports activities, the success of these varies. Combining this with the amount of performance issues and errors means this swing is a whiff, not a hit.”
The SwitchUp YouTube channel was a bit more forgiving, admitting that the issues will likely be patched, resulting in a better game in the future:
“It’s still a flawed gem… there’s definitely a gem, it’s a bit random, sometimes it’s all over the place, but I can see what they were trying to do and I think they’ll be playing this in a year, it’ll probably be great… I can’t wait to see what they can do do.”
And the game’s Italian website Multiplayer.it seemed to enjoy it a lot more than other critics – awarding it an eight out of ten, even with “flaws present”. Here’s a rough translation via Google:
“The sports story continues in the footsteps set by Golf Story, retaining the same protagonist and various elements of the respected cast of the first work of Sidebar Games, improving many elements in its formula.”
Note: If we see more reviews appear in the new year, we’ll add them to the pool above.
