Nintendo’s next console — Switch 2, Super Switch, whatever you want to call it — may not be released until 2025, new rumors suggest.
Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe (over it VGC) made this claim in OX to Controle podcast after consulting five different sources, all of whom have reportedly stated that the sequel to the hybrid console will launch in 2025.
Following Lippe’s tweet, multiple other media outlets appear to corroborate this statement. VGC’s Andy Robinson has also heard of a 2025 date for the Switch 2, and two developers have confirmed to VGC that they are working on Switch 2 games which are planned to be released in early 2025. They could not confirm if this means the console will launch at the same time as the games.
As with any rumor, we’re taking this with a grain of salt. We won’t know until Nintendo makes an official announcement.
Eurogamer is another outlet it says he heard “similar rumblings of an early 2025 launch from industry sources this week,” though she also couldn’t substantiate those specifically. The publisher has contacted Nintendo for further comment.
Just yesterday, over FamiboardsNateTheHate reiterated that a potential 2025 release of the new console could be on the cards and that the only certainty is that “it will come [fiscal year] is the only safe bet, imo”. Nintendo’s fiscal year is determined by the calendar month it ends in, so that means fiscal year 2025 would run from April 2024 to March 2025.
Of course, we won’t know until Nintendo is ready to announce the Switch 2 itself. And, at this rate, that could be anytime. Some rumors pointed to a March 2024 unveiling (via NateTheHate), but whether that will last – especially if the console isn’t due out until 2025 – remains to be seen.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa dodged questions about the next console, saying during a conference call after the company’s third-quarter financial report that the Switch is still the “core business,” reiterating that Nintendo is always exploring new hardware/software.
