Some of the most creative and favorite video games of all time have arrived from Japanese video games and studies. Speaking in a new interview after winning the ART Award from the Japanese Government Government Agency for Cultural Issues, Smash Bros Creator Masahiro Sakurai participated in an interview with the Japanese web site Entax, in which he shared his views on the future of the video game industry in the country in the growing sun. Sakurai was asked what the Japanese game industry should do to keep up with the increasing popularity of Chinese video games such as Genshin Impact and Black Mit: Wukong. Sakurai replied that Japanese games should follow the types of unique games that the Japanese know and love.

“That's not really my idea, but as a trend in the industry, I think the Japanese should continue to follow the things that the Japanese love.”

He continues to explain that the success of various Japanese games in the US has started the trend of “creating Americanized works”. Or, Sakurai notes, “you could say that there was a culture of the following de facto standards.” According to de facto standards, it refers to the practices that industries adopt as widespread norms as a result of market competition.

“I think they seek the uniqueness and fun of the Japanese games” – hence the opinion that Japanese developers have no need to consciously adapt their work to the audience in the US or elsewhere.

“In other words, I think the ideal would be to make games the way you want, because those who agree with you will enjoy them.” Sakurai adds that it is vital that people in the industry “work freely” without allowing other people's ideas to them. Still, he emphasizes that his opinion is just one way of thinking about the subject.
