December’s SteamWorld Build didn’t meet Thunderful’s sales expectations according to him the last fiscal report.
Thunderful CEO Martin Walfisz explained that despite the “new momentum” the game is “slightly below” expectations. He further noted that the genre didn’t appeal to the company’s “most dedicated target audience” and wasn’t a good fit for the Switch, which has always been a “key platform” for Thunderful.
“We are pleased to have new momentum in our most important IP, but December sales are slightly below our expectations”
In addition, the company also stopped the development of its new project SteamWorld Headhunter, but did not explain the reasons for this decision. The company is also in the process of restructuring and is reportedly looking to sell Bridge Constructor publisher Headup.
It hopes to recover in 2024, and in its latest report mentions that it wants to transition to a “more stable and focused company.” Walfisz also sees great potential between 2024-2026 with “fewer, better and bigger titles” and “rumors of the next generation of Nintendo consoles” already creating “excitement and opportunity”.
When SteamWorld Build debuted on Switch last December, we here at Nintendo Life awarded it 8 out of 10 stars and described it as a beautifully crafted game – noting that there isn’t another management sim like it.
