Sega's Western boss has revealed that the company is internally discussing the idea of creating its own subscription-based game service.

Speaking with BBC about subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, Shuji Utsumi said that such services are “very interesting” and that Sega is currently “evaluating some possibilities”.

He added:

We are thinking something – and talking about something – that we cannot reveal now.

This means that Sega would join Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo in offering a monthly subscription offering access to games.

Given its history, it makes sense for Sega to explore a subscription model. It is one of the veterans of the industry and has been producing games since the '70s. With such a rich back catalog, this type of service would immediately appeal to gamers of all ages.

Sega recently removed more than 60 titles from digital storefrontswhich would suggest that the transition to a world of subscription-based gaming is moving at a relatively rapid pace. It also recently removed the Mega Drive / Genesis Classics collection from the eShop, Xbox and PSN stores.

Select Mega Drive / Genesis games are currently available via Nintendo Switch Online.
