Despite constant rumors and speculation, Nintendo still hasn’t revealed its successor to the Switch. While there don’t seem to be any announcements, company president Shuntaro Furukawa has now provided some details on the transition from the current hybrid platform to the “next-generation machine.”
According to comments made by Furukawa during a recent Nintendo shareholder Q&A, the plan is to leverage the existing Nintendo Account system to make the transition to the next generation as easy as possible for users. Here’s part of what Nintendo’s president had to say, courtesy of Twitter user Genki’s translation:
Shuntaro Furukawa: “Regarding the transition from Nintendo Switch to the next-gen machine, we want to do as much as possible to smoothly transition our users while using Nintendo Account.”
While Nintendo has improved with certain account services, it hasn’t always been the smoothest transition from one generation to the next in the past. It has also had its ups and downs with its online infrastructure over the years, and can often have a rather unique approach when it comes to certain aspects of online gaming. There’s also no promise (yet) that users’ existing libraries of digital games will necessarily carry over, and may not necessarily reflect what’s seen on other platforms.
At the very least, this latest update from the company’s president seemingly confirms that Nintendo will make it easier for users already within the ecosystem. It has also been reported that there are currently 290 million Nintendo Accounts, covering both consoles and mobile devices.
Once again, there is no concrete information yet on the next generation of Nintendo hardware. And admittedly, Nintendo doesn’t seem ready to move on from the Switch, especially after the company’s latest Direct – breathing new life into its aging technology with announcements like Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
