Digital Eclipse has announced an interesting sequel to Tetris Welltris will be added to the excellent Tetris Forever compilation title via a free update on Switch.

The game, originally released in 1989, has the same basic gameplay Tetrisbut it adds an extra dimension, essentially turning the play area into a 'well'. It's a strange thing, and it's no surprise that it hasn't reached the same cultural heights as its predecessor, but it's still a great new addition to the game. Digital Eclipse also promises to add more games in the future, so keep your eyes peeled.

Not only that, Tetris Forever has also received some welcome improvements, including the ability to remap controls to Tetris Time Warp and Electronika 60, the MS-DOS and Apple II versions of Tetris. The sound issue in the Switch version has also been patched.

Let's see what exactly has been added here:

Welltris (Spectrum Holobyte, MS-DOS)
First tracking to Tetris created by Alexey Pajitnov, Welltris is a favorite variant in which Tetrimino (and other shapes) fall down the four sides of the well.

TETRIS TIME WARP – All players can now individually remap their controls Tetris Time Warpa new four-player Digital Eclipse game included in the Tetris forever which proved to be a hit with both casual and competitive players. Control remapping was the most requested feature change from players.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS

More customization options: Players can now remap their controls in Electronica 60, MS-DOS, and Apple II console games. This functionality was previously added to the PC version in November.

Audio fix for version change: At launch, a conflict with the rewind function caused audio issues that could be heard when playing some classic games on the Nintendo Switch version Tetris forever. As a first step, the team disabled the Rewind function in games that had audio glitches, which fixed the problem. The team will consider bringing back rewind in a future update.

Tetris Forever is now available through the Switch eShop. In our 8/10 review, we said it was “the best overview of the creation and evolution of the franchise to date.”
