Game Informer has announced that it is closing after 33 years.
The publication, owned by the American retail chain GameStop, began operations back in August 1993, but announced its closure in a short post on social media. It states: “After 33 exciting years of bringing you the latest news, reviews and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it’s with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer” (although sources reportedly said I city that no one at Game Informer wrote the announcement themselves).
The closure also appears to have come as a bit of a shock to the team, with director of online content Brian Shea stating “I heart is broken” as he quoted the news. Similarly, the magazine’s director of content, Kyle Hilliard, described the situation as “Frustrating turn of events”.
As reported by Kotaku, GameStop management appears to have suddenly notified all staff at Game Informer that the publication will be shutting down effective immediately, and that all staff will be fired. One employee was even in the middle of a work trip when the team was notified.
The news comes after a large round of layoffs that took place in 2022, which left none of Game Informer’s original team with the publication. Additional layoffs have occurred in previous years, mostly as a direct result of GameStops’ declining financial results.
The latest edition of the publication is issue number 367, the outlet Dragon Age: The Veilguard cover story.
Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by Game Informer’s closure.
