SEGA and Sonic Team discussed the initial development of the rather well-received Sonic Frontiers. The team consisted of 120 developers that included designers, programmers, sound, etc. Talking further, they said that the game would be a make or break situation for Sonic games and the whole team was filled with a sense of crisis with the thought of “ If we fail here , there will be no chance!” making them all live up to expectations. Fortunately, everything turned out well in the end.
“The development team had a maximum of 20 planners, and a maximum of 120 development members
including designers, developers, sound, etc. This project took about five years in total. The first year we worked with a small group of people to finalize the specs, and I was working on another project during that time, and by the time I came back, the prototype we had built was still quite satisfactory in terms of graphics and playability. It was not. In the project, we use an in-house game engine called “Hedgehog Engine” which is specialized for Sonic’s gameplay, but the development of that is also progressing at the same time, and we are working on creating “Open Zone”. We kept adding the necessary features one after another. The team was filled with a sense of crisis: “We have to create something new!” “If we fail here, there will be no chance!”
