Video: Digital Foundry gives its technical assessment of Ace Combat 7 for Switch

The folks at Digital Foundry have now provided a detailed look at the technology involved in the Switch port, highlighting some of the necessary flaws required for the game to function properly.

For one thing, foliage has taken an understandable hit, with grass looking bumpier, fewer trees popping out, and shadows being eliminated compared to the Xbox game. Reflections have also been tweaked and the lighting isn’t as realistic, making some areas, like the cockpit view, look a bit flat at times.

The resolution has also taken a slight dip, of course, while the Switch doesn’t seem to have effects like motion blur. Still, DF emphasizes that the visuals on the Switch are, on the whole, quite good, and it’s only when compared to other platforms that the concessions begin to be noticed.

In terms of framerates, the Switch version is locked at 30fps, and despite DF’s best efforts, the team couldn’t see many crashes at all, with only one instance of a plane crashing into terrain and producing any visible hiccups. By comparison, the game on Xbox is targeted at 60fps, but rarely hits that, resulting in an experience that’s actually much more choppy than on Switch.

Overall, we’d say Bandai Namco did a great job with this one!
