You probably already know this, but the Nintendo Switch 2 was officially unveiled to the world yesterday. You've also probably noticed that we haven't stopped thinking about it since.
The short trailer – clocking in at two minutes and twenty-one seconds – seemed to hint at a few features, but didn't give too much away. We've seen a new design, a larger size, and what appears to be a mouse function on the Joy-Con. But we think there's something else hiding in plain sight. So the lovely Alex and Felix on our YouTube channel jumped into the trailer and pulled out the juiciest details that might be a little less obvious.
We will not touch all in this article, so be sure to watch the video up top for every detail — secret or otherwise — we spotted on the Switch 2.
So, in the words of the guys — that's more than enough rambling, let's dive right in!
Fine finish
Starting on a subtle note, the finish of the Switch 2 looks quite different from the Switch 1.
It's not easy to tell, but we suspect the Switch 2 has a more matte finish — or, potentially, a powder-coated aluminum finish. It has a more “refined” look than the original Switch.
Larger air vents
On the current Switch, you've probably noticed two thin, long grooves on the back of the console, near the bottom. These air intakes serve to maintain the console cooler.
Well, on the Switch 2, they've moved — and they're a little bigger, too. You'll notice them on the bottom of the new console, right next to the USB-C slot.
Micro SD card slot detected!
You'll miss the moment in a flash, when the new stand is showing, there's a very faint outline that looks like a micro SD card slot.
Not super surprising, but still nice to see!
Is that a microphone?
Yes, the microphone may be coming back. Nintendo hasn't confirmed what the little dot next to the game card slot on the Switch 2 is, but it is look like the old microphone from DS and 3DS.
If it is is mic, well, it's time to bring back the Nintendogs, Nintendo.
IR camera 2
An IR camera isn't new on Switch consoles, so you probably noticed it during the announcement, but what may have gone unnoticed is that there's actually an IR camera on both Joy-Cons.
On the current Switch, the IR camera is only on the right Joy-Con, but here the second camera is on the left Joy-Con. At least that's how it looks. Maybe it's just an aesthetic thing, but that would be a little weird.
Keep it straight
Skipping to the end (for the juicy stuff), the new Joy-Con holder is quite different — simply to accommodate the new magnetic Joy-Con.
The grips no longer cover the Joy-Con and are now flat so you can separate them properly. A small detail, but understandable.
Bezel-ed
The last thing we'll cover here is the display bezel. Compared to the OG Switch model, the bezel on the Switch 2 is much smaller and closer to OLED.
That makes sense – bigger screen and all – but the pages are perhaps a bit wider than we expected. Still, we're just happy that the screen is generally larger than the OG and even OLED.
So those are some of the coolest details we spotted in the trailer for the Switch 2. A reminder, if you want to see allincluding discussions of magnets, the new straps, the stand, and the release buttons for the Joy-Con, be sure to check it out full video.
