I know, I know — a lot of people use the marriage system in Awakening to get the best units. And I did that with some couples. But not I, my Robin. I gave my Robin the very one I wanted to give her for eternity—Lon’q.
Irmidons are my favorite class in Fire Emblem. An extremely fast, powerful unit that has poor defense, Irmidons are glass cannons that I like to master. I was pretty attached to Lon’qua as soon as he joined the army. He’s cold, withdrawn, and likes to keep to himself and do his own thing, which honestly only encouraged me to push through him. I basically threw everything at him to make him one of the most powerful units on the field, and often he would be the one to wipe out most of the enemy army.
But I can admire Lon’qu for his bravery or his coolness, but his whims and vulnerabilities are what endeared me to him. He suffers from gynophobia, so part of me wanted to help him get over it. He’s also a skilled potato peeler (and who doesn’t love potatoes), and he doesn’t like hot weather (same here). We really are a match made in heaven.
And hey, at least my Morgan ended up being a super fast unit with Lon’quo as his father.

I played Fire Emblem: Awakening with my heart on my sleeve. I wasn’t going to team up my
In this case I decided on Sully. I’ve always found those Fire Emblem characters whose whole personality is just ‘grrr i have so much muscle‘bit funny. Every time I meet one, I think there must be something beneath the surface; Sully needed someone to listen to her, and I decided that Robin was just that person. Was there something deeper in the character? Not! It was muscular, but since this was an emerging character creepy Early in the game, I thought of them as childhood sweethearts when it came to learning anything deeper about her.
Of course, it was easier given the fact that I was big on the Cavalier class during my first playthrough of Awakening. Sully’s movement capabilities meant I regularly used her to pick off those pesky archers while the critters fought in one big central crowd (yes, my earlier tactical strategies were a bit chaotic).
Her defiant confidence, can-do attitude and, yes, hilarious obsession with muscles sold Sully for me. There will never be another like her…

I was supposed to marry Donnel.
But I didn’t. Like Alana, I married Lon’qua. I’m not mad about it — his story is interesting, he’s an absolute powerhouse, and he’s cute on top of that. But the thing is, Lon’quo’s whole thing – apart from the slightly silly name – is who he is he hates women. And that’s me. Like a bunch of women before me, I thought to myself, “I can change him,” won over by his unwillingness to speak more than monosyllabic words whenever I was around. Faint.
I like shy guys, although in this case it was shyness combined with misogyny, so I focused all my attention on Lon’qa (after, um, a brief fling with Chrom). But when we got married and he became soft as butter, I realized that – again like many women before me – I had lost interest.
Do not hold it against me! I was in my early 20’s when this game came out and I was clearly in my “bad boy” phase!
If I could go back now, I’d marry Donnel in a heartbeat. He’s not mean, grumpy, or grumpy—in fact, he’s more like my partner: kind, sweet, and eager to please. Except that unlike my real-life partner, Donnel, bless him, isn’t all that smart — but he ended up being my most trusted warrior, having made some progress fierce. He’s the kind of guy you’d want to end up with in your 30s, even if he wears pot as a hat. Plus, it has that awkward charm. And accent. I’m an accent nerd.

Well, this is tricky. It seems that both Jim and I married the same person. The odds seem slim (What is that? She’s, like, the second woman you meet in the game? Shh, you.), but I can understand: Sully is awesome.
Jim, however – like Virion – is a bum and a brazen liar who introduced himself as “Robin” in this game. He probably calls himself ‘Link’ when he’s around Zelda. Phew. To install Avatar shmavatar. Sully deserves better than that duplicitous scoundrel.
While my love will forever burn for my flame-haired Shepherd wife (the “Woman to End All Men” no less), our marriage actually ended long ago. I fired up my old save file to relive those memories and was reminded of her infectious energy, unbridled warrior spirit and sailor tongue. “Who left this crap lying around?” she would often ask me. It was me, my dearest. It was me.
A toast to all our lost loves! Well, both of them. Great minds, Team NL. Great minds.
