In this day and age, portable consoles are the order of the day, and before, it was practically enough to Nintendo, today there are heavyweights like Valve, ASUS or Lenovo in the industry. However, one user wanted to take it a step further with the intention of taking a Pokémon emulator to the next level and created their own. portable consolein this case powered by an APU AMD Ryzen 5 5600Galthough, as you will see, he encountered some “difficulties” in the design.
And ultimately, no matter how talented an individual is, what they lack are the resources that large companies have, not only at the production level but also at the design level. We must take into account that they manage to fit into a portable format, hardware powerful enough to run games, which also has good autonomy, which weighs little and is easy to transport… and that That’s where this DIY handheld console “clicks.” Let’s go see her.
The portable console that’s not so portable
As you can see in user @Raven0606’s Reddit post, his handheld console is fully functional but has one key design issue, which is that with its size and weight, it would be quite uncomfortable to use when you’re , for example, sitting on it. on the bench in a park, when you are a passenger in a car or even lying in bed.

The device is quite thick and incorporates two fairly large fans on the back to keep the internal hardware cool; In total, this portable console weighs 1,560 grams (and that without the external battery which allows you to use the console without plugging it in), or more than a kilo and a half that you would have to hold while playing, which would be quite uncomfortable.
Even though, as we mentioned, this is a handheld console that is anything but portable, it still deserves enormous credit for having managed to “make” its own product without the backing of a major company behind it. According to the modder, it took him around 9 months to complete the project.
And what hardware does this console have?
As we mentioned at the beginning, the hardware of this portable console was built around an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G APU, which, despite being a relatively old processor, has 6 cores and 12 threads of processes at 4.4 GHz (maximum), which is enough for virtually any modern game, especially for the Pokémon emulator, which is what the modder built it for in the first place.
Accompanying this APU, the motherboard used is an ASUS To complete the package, the console has a 108 Wh external battery which is connected and mounted separately, that is to say, as we mentioned previously, its weight and volume should be added to the more than a kilo and a half of the console itself. .
Finally, it is worth mentioning that an 8-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, a touchscreen and an HDMI interface has also been integrated, which is ideal for the console.
What do you think of this project? Personally we love seeing user creations, we see there being a lot of merit in doing things like this without a big company backing your idea.
