If there’s a place where everyone players we have always wanted to travel to feel like in the mecca of video games, this place has always been Los Angeles, which between the months of May and June has been our home since the late 90s the greatest fair that time has seen, at least in the West. An E3 in which, year after year, the news of the months and years to come on PC as on consoles was presented.
sticks in the wheels
Apart from the show itself, which was really the least important because it was closed to professionals and the news was already appearing in dribs and drabs, the really important thing happened in the previous days
For this year we were finally going to have an edition normalunderstood as face to face, with stalls and various pavilions at the Los Angeles Expo Center as well as some conferences, although we already know that Nintendo, Sony and, almost certainly Microsoft, were not going to repeat the appointment. Many of us already thought that it didn’t make sense for the fair to act as if nothing had happened, but the organizing company decided to continue as planned.
The result is that it has now been confirmed that there will be no E3 in Los Angeles after the trickle of resignations in recent days, where Ubisoft, SEGA and Tencent have jumped on the bandwagon in spectacular fashion. They are obviously not responsible for what happened, but they seem to have become the straw that broke the camel’s back for the organization. So there might remain little appeal beyond small businesses, many of which are focused on distributing small projects, like Devolver Digital.
Of all, they killed her…
We don’t know if the last straw of this decision was Ubisoft’s latest announcement, which is fox-crazed and it looks like its crisis is so deep that we’ll see how it comes out of it, but it looks like E3 2023 is not only canceled but dead forever. His date scheduled for June 13, 14, 15 and 16 will no longer take place and the truth is that looking at the list of remaining participants, it is better that they have gone this route.
And especially, in a cheaper way since it was not necessary to make a millionaire stayfill it with consoles, rent the exhibition space, pay the workers and move the members of all its offices and development teams around the planet.
While those of us who have attended multiple E3s throughout its history hurt to see the world’s best video game show like this, unfortunately there is no choice but to accept it. The format is outdated and it will be hard to see anyone bringing it back to life as it once was. Better to drop, forget this 2023 edition and close forever this -important- part of the history of video games.
Players of the world… E3 is dead!
