One of the major new features that we are particularly impatiently awaiting in Android 16 is live updates, and Google has confirmed that it would not be limited to its own Pixel smartphones.
Google has shown this live updates functionality during its major Google I / S event this week. This promises to give you glancable information on things such as food orders, with a progress bar and a delivery estimate published just there on your locking screen and your notification menu, without asking to open the application.
You will also have the possibility of taking measures from these information widgets – to give a tip or call the delivery driver, for example.
Live updates coming to a Samsung near you
Another interesting extract to emerge from the Keynote of E / S Google (as spotted by Android Authority) is confirmation that live updates will not be a pixel feature.
Samsung will integrate it into its own head information system, also known as the bar now, as part of the ONE UI 8 update based on Android 16.
OnePlus should also implement live updates in its own live alerts oxygenos – a system which, like OnePlus 13, acts in a similar way to the dynamic island of Apple.
It has also been confirmed that Xiaomi and Vivo will implement live updates in their highly personalized Android skins. Essentially, we expect live updates to become a fundamental part of the user interface of the major Android manufacturer during the coming year.
Far from the opening, the parent company of OnePlus Oppo was also confirmed for the management of live updates, Google having used an Oppo phone (as well as a Google Pixel 9 phone and a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra) to demonstrate live updates on its developer blog.
Are the live updates delayed?
Do not be ahead of yourself, however. Live updates may not arrive alongside Android 16 in the coming months.
It is not present in the first beta version of Android 16 QPR1, while Google indicates that the functionality “would take place on the devices during the next year” on stage on Google I / O.
Obviously, the third -party application support will be necessary to make this functionality sing, so it is possible that Google has its ducks in a row before deploying live updates for Android 16 proper.
