Aukey got us used to good value for money. And after testing the Aukey SK-A2 speaker, I can say that it still is. The company sells one of the best low-cost Bluetooth speakers on the market.
Not long ago I tried the headphones Aukey EP-T31 and despite not having ANC, I have found them ideal for those who want to enjoy good quality music without spending a fortune. Now I will explain why you could say the same about the SK-A2.
This has been my experience testing the Aukey SK-A2 speaker (and twice).
Quality design and construction
Taking the SK-A2 speaker out of the box, I realize how much it looks like the Tribit I have at home and use to listen to music in the shower. It is compact, light and with a structure that seems resistant to impact.
This speaker measures 175 x 67 x 50mm and weighs 364g. This makes it ideal for taking it anywhere: from room to room, on a picnic in the park or even to the beach, as it has an IP67 resistance to dust and water ( it can reach 1 meter deep for 30 minutes).
It has a rectangular shape with rounded edges, like many speakers of this type, the metal grille occupying the entire front panel. At the top we have the buttons, and below there are four rubber feet so that it won’t slip or damage the surface where you leave it.
On the right side there is a ring, which reinforces the idea that it can be easily carried. The ring is discreet and useful, but it does take some time to lift it up so you can attach the speaker to a backpack or hang it elsewhere.
On the left side, on the other hand, we have a protective cap that covers both ports. It’s also a bit difficult to open (I imagine even more so with long fingernails), but at least it gives the assurance that water won’t enter easily.
From a design point of view, what surprised me the most was the rear. At first, it’s surprising to see a hole, which I thought was to store the cables (they don’t fit). Although I was even more surprised to find that this part of the enclosure sinks in easily, but I don’t understand for what purpose.
In general, it is a sober, elegant and discreet speaker. On this occasion, I was able to test the model in black. While this is usually the color I choose for my electronics, I would have liked to see it in red, gray or blue, the other colors available.
Sound quality and performance
As I said before, we find the controls where they are usually found: at the top. There is an on / off button, a multi-function button (pause / resume, answer / reject call …) and the two volume buttons (press and hold to change songs, although it does not always work well ).
The Aukey SK-A2 has two 5W (45mm) speakers in the front. This provides a total power of 10W RMS (the maximum power before distortion occurs in the audio). At the rear we have a passive radiator to increase the bass.
Speaking of bass, it was to be expected that this would be its main handicap, given precisely the presence of a passive radiator. The bass sounds are a bit weak, but I don’t think the average listener will notice much of a difference.
After all, when you have a speaker of this size and at this price, you have to accept that the bass will not be your strong point. I was recently able to test the Tribit StormBox Pro, which per forms better in this regard, but also comes with a higher price tag.
On the other hand, it must be said that, despite the limitation of the dimensions of the SK-A2, the highs and mids are perfectly heard, especially the mids. The voices of podcasts and movie actors are equally crisp.
In the audio department, another weak point is the volume. While it is true that it will be more than sufficient indoors (outdoors it will depend on the noise around you), you will not benefit from the same audio quality at very high volume.
In this sense, I recommend that you do not increase it beyond 75 or 80%, as it is at this point that you start to notice a loss of quality. The sound is distorted and not all tones will be appreciated the same.
If you want to use the speakerphone, note that it has an internal microphone. This will allow you to make calls without using the phone. The sound quality is also good, although it is best to call only in places without much noise.
Connectivity and battery
One of the main reasons you are probably considering buying this speaker is because it is wireless. And for that it is essential to have a good battery life, which we find here.
It’s a 2,200mAh battery that Aukey says provides up to 28 hours of battery life. I have to say this is close to my personal experience but only when playing music at medium volume. At higher volumes, the battery is significantly reduced.
On the other hand, you will be interested to know that it supports the Bluetooth 5.0 standard, which has a very good range (10 meters). In fact, it can pass through multiple walls without cutting off the signal, although that will depend on each house.
One of the big advantages is that it can be used both with Bluetooth and with a cable. As we have already said, on the left side we find the ports: one of them is an AUX input. The other: a USB-C port.
The port jack 3.5mm is used to connect any other device from which you want to listen to music. If you don’t want to waste the battery, you can use the AUX cable that came in the box to connect it to your laptop. Offers good timing for watching movies.
In the box (cardboard, by the way, and very easily recyclable), a USB-C cable is also included to charge the speaker. Of course, you have to use an AC adapter you have at home or buy one like this Aukey charger.
TWS Mod
I already announced at another point in this review that this speaker offers the possibility of connecting it to another like it and thus enjoy stereo sound. One of them will work as a right channel and the other as a left channel.
Accessing this TWS (True Wireless Stereo) feature is not at all complicated. First, you will need to activate both speakers. Then you will need to press the on / off button on both devices twice to activate TWS mode.
After a few seconds, the pairing should be complete and music should be playing from both devices. Otherwise, check that you have connected at least one of them to your computer or mobile.
I especially liked this possibility, because it will enrich any cinema showings you do at home.
Pricing and availability
The Aukey SK-A2 speaker is a very economical option for listening to music inside and outside the home. It’s available on Amazon for a low price of $ 29.99, although you’ll have to buy two and pay almost $ 60 (very affordable) if you want to enjoy stereo sound.
Either way, this is one of the best inexpensive speakers on the market today. If you want to see other options premium, do not miss our selection of the best speakers. You may also be interested in the best sound bars.
Verdict
In short, it’s a very complete speaker, especially since you won’t have to spend a lot of money to have it (not even to have two and enjoy the sound in stereo).
The size of the Aukey SK-A2 are only pluses and it has a very good build quality (although I see some butes). In fact, its dimensions do not prevent it from having excellent battery life or decent sound.
It is true that the bass can be improved but, honestly, that was to be expected. It was also to be expected that the audio quality would drop a bit (maybe I didn’t expect it to be that much) at high volume.
