In recent months, you'll probably have noticed how many cinematic universes have developed simultaneously with films and television series. Warner Bros. gave us The Penguin, a spin-off series from Matt Reeves' The Batman, and Dune: Prophecy, a prequel to Denis Villeneuve's two science fiction films. Harry Potter is getting a new series adaptation, not to mention the mysterious film set in the Game of Thrones universe.
Disney isn't far behind its rival, working ferociously on the Alien: Earth series to expand the franchise centered around Xenomorph. However, one of the few famous universes that doesn't have too many installments is the one created by Ridley Scott. Based on the novel by Philip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Blade Runner lived to see only two major sequels.
Blade Runner: 2049, created by Villeneuve, was released in 2017, accompanied by three short films filling in the gaps between the two films. The Blade Runner: Black Lotus anime and several comic issues were released in 2021, but not much has happened in the world of androids and their hunters over the decades.
Amazon Prime Video, however, wants to change that with the television series Blade Runner 2099. The show will take viewers even further into a dystopian future filled with humanoid machines and their existential dilemmas.
When will Blade Runner 2099 be released?
As of now, it is unclear when the series might premiere on Prime Video. Production began in Prague, Czech Republic in May 2024 and is expected to wrap in December 2024. The creators of the series certainly need to hurry, because in January 2025 filming for season 3 of Euphoria will begin, and Hunter Schafer , one of the stars of Blade Runner 2099, will be essential on the set.
Given the time required for post-production and marketing, even if filming on Blade Runner finishes as planned, the series will likely debut in late 2025/early 2026 at the earliest.
Who is the team behind Blade Runner 2099?
Silka Luisa, screenwriter of Halo and Shining Girls, is showrunner, while Ridley Scott is executive producer of the series. Jonathan van Tulleken, director of Shōgun, is set to create the first two episodes.
What will the plot of Blade Runner 2099 be?
As the title of the series indicates, the story will take place fifty years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. According to ComicBookMovie.com, the synopsis of the series is as follows:
In Los Angeles in 2099, Cora has lived her entire life on the run, a chameleon forced to adopt many identities. To ensure a stable future for her brother, she assumes a final identity and is forced to team up with Olwen, a replicant who faces the end of her life. The two are drawn into a growing conspiracy that poses an existential threat to a city struggling to be reborn.
In the 1982 film, Harrison Ford plays a detective (or blade runner, as they are called in this universe), Rick Deckard, tasked with catching and killing fleeing androids. Investigating four dangerous runaway robots (called Replicants), he crosses dystopian Los Angeles and encounters its strange inhabitants on his way. He meets a brilliant creator of artificial intelligence and begins a romance with the mysterious Rachel, played by Sean Young.
In the 2017 sequel, the story follows another blade runner, K, himself a replicant, played by Ryan Gosling. 30 years later, Rick Deckard and Rachel are legends whose fate remains unknown. K is sent to investigate the case of a replicant who died after a cesarean section. Hunting his child, K reaches the end of the civilized world and stumbles upon the trail of the android freedom movement.
At this time, it is unclear how the events of the two cinematic films apply to the plot of Blade Runner 2099. Some believe that Ryan Gosling's K will make an appearance in the series, but the series creator does not has not confirmed this rumor.
