Blue death screens (BSOD) have been accompanying us for many years, practically from the first version of Windows. Fortunately, the number of blue screens of this type that shows Windows 11 is much lower than that of previous versions, however, this does not mean that this version of the Microsoft operating system is completely free.
When a blue screen is displayed, it is also shown what the origin of the problem could be, but not always. If this screen shows the name of the Hardlock.sys controller, we have a problem which, unlike most of them, is not linked to RAM.
Hardlock.sys is a Windows device controller which is part of the hardware -based copy protection system, and not software via and which allows communication between the operating system and a hardware key which generally connects to the USB port.
Its main function is to allow programs to run only when it takes it equipment is connected to the operating system. As we can see, its operation is similar when the games have been distributed in CDs and DVDs. If we did not have it, it could not be verified that we had the original game and, therefore, it did not open.
This controller is only used by Windows when we have a hardware device for these characteristics, so this error can only appear if we use it. Although it is a third part controller, this does not mean that it is exempt from showing blue death screens, that is to say during the Windows update process, when updating the drivers or the simple enter the equipment.
How to solve the hardlock.sys problem in Windows
As with many Windows errors, this problem does not have a single solution. If you suffer from this problem and want to end it once and for all, then we show you different ways to do it.
Modify the Windows register
The most common way to solve this problem is to modify the Windows recording to modify the Hardlock value. To do this, we access it from the Windows search zone with the text “Regedit” without quotes and click on the first result.
Then we go to the location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesHardlock
Then click on the starter file to access its properties and modify the value of number 4. Finally, click Accept and restart the PC to check if the problem has been solved.
Delete the latest Windows update
Windows updates do not feel so well for all teams. If you have noticed that this blue death screen has appeared since you have installed the last update, we already know what is the origin of the problem. The solution is to eliminate the last update, which we can do by following the steps we show you below:
- We access the Windows configuration menu (Win + I).
- Then click on Windows update and click on Update history.
- In the next step, we click on Uninstalling updates.
- Finally, we select the last update that we have installed and click on the button Uninstall.
Reinstall the controller
Another method that we can also try is to access the device administrator, select the hardware device connected to our PC and right button, select the uninstallation option.
At that time, Windows will detect it again and download the last updated driver of its database on – Writing what is on the PC and that its malfunction will probably be corrupt.
