From Nosferatu: a Symphony of Horror by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau at The Amenábara's the Otor by Alejandro Amenábara, Gothic Horror has a great tradition in the history of cinema. In recent years, Gothic Horror has experienced a revival, with Suspiria by Luca Guadagnino and Nosferatu by Robert Eggers. Not to mention Saltburn of Emerald Fennell or poor things by Yórgos Lánthimos, which clearly play with Gothic aesthetics. Frankenstein is the passionate project of Del Toro. The director mentioned it for the first time in 2008, admitting that he dreamed of adapting the novel by Mary Shelley since childhood. At that time, he noted that it would not be a faithful adaptation but a story in classical history.
I do not do “Frankenstein by Mary Shelly”. I make an adventure story that involves the creature. I cannot say much, but it is not the history of central creation, I am not worried about it. The fact is that I dream of making a film “Frankenstein” since I was a child. The only thing I can promise is that, compared to Kenneth Branagh, I will not appear shirtless in the film!
In 2022, in a podcast interview for variety awards, Guillermo del Toro revealed:
Well, I work on a monster film; I cannot say the title because it can change, and I could end up doing something else. But right now, I'm writing and designing. And we have had it for a few years. I hope it will be next, but anything can happen.
In October 2023, during the conversation with Collider, the director officially announced that he was working on the film Frankenstein for Netflix:
I do Frankenstein. We work there, we start to shoot in February. It is a film that I have wanted to make for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein and I had an epiphany and which is essentially a film which requires a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I could not have made 10 years ago, 20 years ago and now I am quite courageous or crazy or something and we will attack it.
What will be the intrigue of Frankenstein by Guillermo del Toro?
Frankenstein; Or, the Modern Prometheus is a famous Gothic novel written by Mary Shelley in 1818. The story was developed as part of a friendly writing competition that the British author held with the lover and the future husband Percy bysshe Shelley, John Polidori and Lord Byron in Switzerland.
The novel, considered a first example of science fiction, tells the story of the young man Victor Frankenstein. After the death of his mother, obsessed with alchemy and modern science, he tried to create an artificial life. Using body parts and electricity, Victor makes a monstrous creature, which he abandons in panic after she wakes up in the laboratory.
For the moment, we do not know how much Del Toro has adapted the famous novel. The movie's official newspaper line reads as follows:
The Oscar -winning director, Guillermo Del Toro, adapts the classic tale of Victor Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, a brilliant but selfish scientist who gives life to a creature in a monstrous experience which ultimately leads to the update of the Creator and his tragic creation.
