Our Verdict
If you can't afford a flagship Dyson heater with air purifying technology, then the AM09 has a lot of benefits aside from simply being cheaper – although it's still quite expensive compared to the standards of rechargeable radiators. But it is compact, with high-quality construction and offers good performance and features.

Dyson fan heaters are typically large and expensive, largely because they contain air-purifying technology as well as smart features such as Wi-Fi connectivity, but there is a more affordable option.
Introducing the Dyson Hot+Cool Jet Focus AM09. Of course, it's still far from affordable at £399/$499, but it's readily available for a more affordable £269/$299 – and if you want a Dyson rather than a dupe, this is a solid option.
Dyson lists it as a desk fan, but although it's much smaller than most of the brand's ranges, including the Pure Hot+Cool, I wouldn't put it on my desk in a hurry. You could do this in a pinch, but I'd say it's more of a soil-friendly device.

If you're looking for something office-friendly, take a look at the Dreo 16-inch heater, which costs around £60 from Amazon, or the Dreo Atom One heater, $49.99 from Dreo.
It's compact in size and shape (595mm tall), small but powerful, and light enough (2.6kg) that you can easily move it around the house without a problem.
Setup is simple and basically involves attaching the base, plugging it in (the 6-foot cord gives you plenty of room), and turning it on. I didn't need the instruction manual.
Once the AM09 is ready to go, you have a range of different modes and settings. As the full name suggests, the device can heat or cool and you have a choice between fan speed and temperature.

The latter is something you probably won't find on some cheaper alternatives, which simply blow hot air unless you turn them off manually. Dyson gives you a temperature range of 0-37°C and it's thermostatic, so it will automatically turn off when the room reaches the right temperature and add it back up if it drops.
The AM09 can also pan left and right (although it can't be tilted) and offers two different modes: Diffuse and Jet Focus. The first is a wider spread of air and the second gives you a narrow blow.
You can also set a timer and the remote control, as usual, attaches to the top of the fan with magnets, which is handy.

Key information such as temperature and fan speed (when you set them) is visible on the fan by way of a small screen above the integrated power button. It works as advertised but is close to the ground if that's where you have the AM09.
I found that the unit heats very well and very quietly thanks to its bladeless design. Plus, I won't need to put it in the loft when summer comes because it gets colder too.

Should you buy the Dyson Hot Cool Jet Focus AM09?
Overall, if your budget allows, the Dyson Hot+Cool Jet Focus AM09 is a great option for a fan that heats and cools in a compact size with many useful features.
It will suit ticketing offices like mine, as well as many other spaces such as loft conversions and garden rooms. I'd just like it in more colors than the standard White Nickel combo (although the US also gets a more attractive Satin Black/Nickel colorway).
