Google’s annual developer conference is fast approaching. The company has confirmed dates and sent out invites for Google I/O 2023, but what can we expect from the California event?
Although there will be a live event this year, only a handful of people will be invited to attend in person. Instead, you can register for the event and watch online. Here’s everything you need to know.
When is the Google I/O 2023 conference?
We now have a confirmed date for Google I/O 2023: Wednesday May 10.
Based on previous years, the keynote will begin at 10:00 a.m. PST (1:00 p.m. EST, 6:00 p.m. BST). The 2022 event lasted approximately two hours.
How to watch Google I/O 2023
Anyone can now sign up for Google I/O through the Google website, giving you access to additional sessions and joining online communities.
But if you just want to watch the main speech, it’s not mandatory. As usual, this will be streamed live via Google’s official YouTube channel.
What to expect from Google I/O 2023
Google I/O is primarily developer-focused, but the keynote will include plenty of consumer-relevant announcements.
The most likely is Android 14, Google’s next major software release for phones and tablets. Developer previews are already available on recent Pixel phones, but they’re expected to be officially announced during I/O.
Rumors are relatively thin on the ground, though satellite calling, predictive rear navigation (get a preview of the previous screen before continuing) and Nearby Share feature are limited to Google phones (rather than available for all Android handsets).
But many more features are expected, including AI-focused ones. Google’s Bard chatbot was launched recently, and it should soon be integrated with Android and Google Assistant. However, the latter may also get other new features.
We may see an update to Google’s Wear OS software for smartwatches, but new hardware is also possible.
The mid-range Pixel 7a smartphone is the most likely, especially since it’s already leaked a lot. We might also learn more about the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, even though they won’t officially launch until later in the year.
Could the Pixel Fold also be mentioned? Google’s first-ever foldable is thought to be on the way, and it’s expected to adopt a book-style design rather than a flip phone. Some leaked renders have appeared online, but the I/O may be too soon for Google to officially start teasing them.
The only way to know for sure is to tune in to the live keynote, or you can just return to Tech Advisor after the event for all the mainline coverage.
