Microsoft will release the new Windows 10 update in October. It is earlier than expected but in line with the company’s double review cycle with its operating system. For now, replacement Windows 10 is not yet considered.
It may seem like you have to wait a few weeks to enjoy the new features, but Windows Insider Program members already have access to updates, and can offer the answer until the final version is released.
So the easiest way to get the October update is to join the Windows Insider program, but it’s not as straightforward as it may sound. In this article we explain everything you need to know.
How to get the following Windows 10 update now
Before we begin, it should be noted that the version currently available in the Windows Insider program is not the one that will eventually be available to customers. This means that there will be bugs and some features may not work as well as they should.
We recommend that you follow only the steps below on a device other than your main Windows computer or laptop, as we cannot guarantee stability.
1. Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Update and Security’ and select ‘Windows Insider Program’ from the left panel.
2. You may be asked permission to collect diagnostic data.
3. In the ‘Windows Insider Program‘ section, click on ‘Start’ and you will see a window that pops up to sign up. This will not work if you have already done it before.
4. Once you have registered, you will have to wait a few seconds and then click on ‘Connect account’.
5. Sign in with your Microsoft account. About 30 seconds later, you will be allowed to select your Insider program settings. Click on ‘Beta Channel (Recommended)’ and then click on ‘Verify’.
6. Please confirm on the next screen to give Microsoft permission to collect information about your experience.
7. After that you will need to restart your device for the change to take effect.
8. Now, you should see that the new Windows 10 update comes in the ‘Windows Update’ section of ‘Settings’: version 20H2.
For this version to be available, you must install the May 2020 update (version 2004) first. If you do not see a new update to install, you may need to make these configuration changes:
1. Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Update and Security’ and select ‘Windows Insider Program’ from the left panel.
2. In the Insider settings section, click the current option, which should be ‘Beta Channel (Recommended) if you have followed this tutorial.
3. Now, switch it to ‘Release Preview Channel’ or ‘Dev Channel’.
4. Restart your device, and I hope the update is available in ‘Settings’> ‘Update and security’.
Once you have successfully installed the update, it is important that you exit the Windows Insider program so that future versions will not automatically download to your device.
1. Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Update and Security’ and select ‘Windows Insider Program’ on the left panel.
2. You will see a section that will allow you to disable auto-updates.
