Even if two laptops look the same physically, they may have a different ID. The model of a laptop depends on the components, the type of screen, the resolution and the connectivity. All these aspects can influence the final denomination of the portable by the manufacturers.
Why is it necessary to know the laptop model
There are many reasons why you might not know exactly what laptop model you have and the serial number. The laptop may have been given to you, you may have had it for a long time, or you may simply have acquired it refurbished for its good price, among other things. Either way, knowing the model and serial number is important and fairly straightforward.
One of the fundamental factors in knowing this information is when deal with laptop warranty. They will surely ask you for a series of information, among which the model and the serial number. This is also important data for finding spare parts if the laptop is already a few years old and out of warranty. Still, this information is important for finding the best possible drivers.
We recommend even before buy new or used laptop, check the model. Searching for the manufacturer and model of the laptop on Google can find all the information about the laptop. Why should I do this? If it is new, because surely on the small sign of the shop
The quickest and easiest way is to look at the sides of the laptop case, if you have one. The next point is to see the sticker on the bottom of the laptop itself. If it’s been removed or worn, don’t worry, Windows is a great looker and will give us that info. Next, we will explain all the methods to find out the model and serial number of a laptop.
How to know the laptop model?
We have two fairly simple options, like seeing the sticker that all laptops have in the lower area. If we are going to buy a used laptop, it is better not to trust the sticker. It may have been manipulated, come on, they put one that doesn’t match. For this reason, it is best to enter Windows and check the model with the data offered by the manufacturer.
see the sticker on the back
What you need to know is that all laptops, from the factory, bring the at the bottom an informative sticker. This sticker tells us all the certifications of the laptop and, above all, the exact model and serial number. So it’s as simple as turning around and seeing that information, whether to google its specs or anything else we need. The sticker may have worn off from use, which is relatively normal, so you will need to use one of the following methods we describe.
If you have the laptop bag or they sell it to you with it, in the lateral you will also see this information. All manufacturers print the model and serial number on the side of the box. One of the reasons is to avoid the wrong laptop being distributed or the wrong laptop being packaged.
As you can see from the image below, the sticker can be read clearly. In our case, an ASUS TUF laptop, even the year and month of manufacture are indicated.
Using msinfo32
Windows provides us with this information, as well as many other useful information. It is as simple as entering the system information option, where it will give us all the data on our laptop. In fact, many applications that read our computer to give us useful information like AIDA64, take the data from here. The procedure is as follows:
- Of the box Research of taskbar of Windows, you must write System information
- We will now click on System information (we can also give an introduction)
- One of the first pieces of information it shows us is system modelas we mark you below these lines
Using the DirectX Diagnostic Tool
Most games today use the DirectX API and install natively with Windows. This tool is available on any system and will give us, more or less, the same information as the previous option. To access it, just follow these steps:
- Of the box Research of taskbar of Windows, you must write DXDoag
- We will press Enter to make it work
- A small window will appear, where we will select yes
- As you can see, the information displayed is exactly the same as in the previous option
Via the terminal or via PowerShell
If in addition to knowing the model you need to know the serial number of the laptop, this is another very interesting option. Here it goes through the command line, being perhaps a little less intuitive. The truth is that it’s not difficult either, just enter said command and nothing else. It is done as follows:
- Of the box Research of taskbar of Windows, you must write CMD
- We will press Enter for the command prompt to open
- We enter the following command: wmic csproduct get name, ID number and press enter
- The “IdentifyingNumber” is the serial number and the “Name” is the model
We hope this was helpful for you to certify that your laptop is the model you purchased and that they did not change you at the time of selling your computer or at technical service. In any case, we recommend that you print or write down the information in a place that you know and can refer to later if necessary. Especially after a format where you sometimes have to manually search for some exclusive drivers for certain models.
